Here’s a photo of Nathan Williams that ran in the DIG BMX photo annual last year. And below, you can check the video footage. There’s a little trick I used to stop the action a bit more, maybe I’ll do a post on that later?

(video from above photo via Eclat)

Shane Weston: Eclat Advert
I’ve shot a ton of photos with Shane over the years. Its usually either extremely tech and low, or big and burly like this barspin. I was super lucky-as sometimes happens to the benefit of the photographer and detriment of the rider- to get multiple attempts at shooting this because he kept missing the second part of this line (doing this trick followed by another afterward).
I shot it like this seen first, then with a 2 stop ND filter so that I could blur the shrubs in the foreground, then having shot both those nicely timed picked up my Bronica SQ-a and got two attempts on film! The top one is the digi with no ND, followed by the film timed a hair late in sunlight, then timed OK but in the shadows. (My ND filter is pathetic and the photo was too soft to use, I really need to get a nice one).
In the end as usually happens (to me at least), the digi shot is what ran in the advert; I waver, but today I like the 3rd one the best.
Tech info: Canon 1Ds mk III and 50mm 1.4, 2 Einstein strobes on Action setting, one little nikon speedlight behind the pillar for the ‘butt light’, and one little nikon speedlight in the hallway to show how Shane had to start far back and hit a tight corner before this hop.

Here’s the video footage.

Also, after we shot this barspin we took a break for dinner then shot this. It was a good day. Shane Weston: Eclat Advert

Timon.

Timon is a great friend of mine who I love shooting with. On top of that, he took part in on the latest 24HR Records session. The studio was at an old victorian house in North Nashville. I arrived for the session at 9AM day 1, and shot this at 11AM day two (with about 25 mins of sleep somewhere around sunrise). This bright red brick was too good to pass up even though Timon was fresh off napping in a cold guitar closet. The morning branches’ shadows made a nice texture on the wall.

Outside of sleepless photo shoots, Timon is  the guitarist in Dan Ellsworth and the Great Lakes. They just released a new album and music video. Check them out.

Here’s a photo I shot of DE&TGL in early 2012. It’s a quadruple exposure on a Mamiya RB67.

I just got a roll of T Max 400 back that was in my Olympic Stylus Epic for the past 5 months. I had no idea what was on it since I’d shoot one frame every two weeks or so (kind of the point). I’ll be posting some of my favorites starting with Alex Magallan here above.

I first met Alex when I moved to Nashville in 2005 and he was the kid from Donnelson with skin tight jeans, long hair, and a bad attitude quietness. Since then we’ve shot photos all over the country, though my favorites are ones from Nashville, like this roof drop in. Deer: Lawrence, Kansas.

I’m on process of moving to Los Angeles. I’m shooting mostly film, but will try to get some digi snaps posted.

I had the awesome opportunity last fall to be a part of Cale Glendening’s Blood and Oil shoot. I’d never worked on a production like this before, and I had such a good time and learned a ton. I brought along some cameras, but didn’t shoot nearly as much as I planned since I was so intrigued by the filming process. Definitely makes me want to try this filming thing out…
I actually photographed Robert, one of the founders of the Blackbirds four years ago, before the group was created. And before motorcycles, I was shooting him on a good ol BMX bike.

East LA from 2 weeks back. Missing this climate.

I’m a big fan of Film Box here in Nashville. My film shooting had nearly ground to a halt due to the closing of local processing labs until last year when Austin and Ryan opened shop. Film Box scans all my stuff perfectly-I barely have to touch the files. Most film photos on this blog are good examples.

Film Box asked me to be featured in their promo reel. I called up Pat and went to a standby spot in East Nashville close to the lab and had him fire out some 3’s over the sidewalk. Only a couple of quick clips of me made it in the final video. Here’s the photo from it.

It was funny and a bit nerve-racking hearing someone unexperienced with the dynamic between BMX Photographer and Rider. Saying something to the effect of, “don’t worry if he crashes, either way we’ll still get the shot” doesn’t bode well for the rider’s confidence…

Related- my Bronica SQ-a that I used for this photo for the sole purpose of its 1/500 flash sync has been tested (by me) and I’m guessing the actual speed to be close to 1/200. Fun times in the world of film!
